R.G. "Hank" Utley published two articles in the book Sports in the Carolinas, edited by Ed Southern. The book is a collection of essays, profiles, and personal reminiscences written by different contributors from North and South Carolina. Proceeds from the book benefit the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

R.G. "Hank" Utley, 84 year old native of Concord, served as a 2nd Lt. Bombardier on a B-29 in WWII, and played baseball and graduated from N.C. State in 1950. After retiring in 1989 he researched and co-authored "The Independent Carolina Baseball League, 1936-1938" and "Outlaw Ballplayers", published by McFarland. He presented research papers at the 1997 Society For American Baseball Research (SABR) National Conference and the 1998 Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture. The Hank Utley Baseball Collection is located in the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County and the R.G. (Hank) Utley Pi Kappa Alpha Easter Monday Papers, 1899-1956 are located at the N.C. State Libraries Special Collection Research Center.
